Extracorporeal Liver Support System

Artificial extracorporeal liver support or liver dialysis detoxifies the body when there is liver failure. For patients with hepatorenal syndrome, this treatment has been promising. Extracorporeal liver support is based on the same principles as hemodialysis. However, Hemodialysis removes water-soluble toxins and does not remove albumin bound toxins.

The clinical condition of liver failure is the buildup of toxins in the body, which cannot be filtered out by the failing liver. Artificial extracorporeal liver support system take the place of the liver when the liver stops functioning, by filtering out the impurities in the blood. The systems remove such toxins as bilirubin, bile acids, cytokines, and medium-chain fatty acids as well as other impurities. There are currently several artificial detoxification devices under clinical evaluation. The Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System or MARS. Since 1993,more than 400 patients have been treated with MARS in Europe, the United States, and Asia. Other instruments include the Single Pass Albumin Dialysis, SPAD, and the Prometheus system.
