Diagnosis
and Diagnostic
Diagnosis comes from the Greek word dia, meaning by and the word gnosis,
meaning knowledge. Today, physician diagnosis patients based on signs,
symptoms, and laboratory results, which are conclusive of disease.
An individual with abnormal symptoms consults with a physician, who then
examines the individual for signs of disease. The physician then
formulates a hypothesis. In many circumstances, the attending physician
will order test to confirm or rule out a diagnosis before rendering a
treatment. Some of the test that a physician will order may included
blood work, imaging such as x-rays or sonograms, urinalysis, and
possibly biopsies.
The possible diagnoses based on information gathered which is referred
to as a differential
diagnosis. A final diagnosis is only arrived upon after intense
investigations and or consultations.
